EcoBloc Inspect SMART Installation
Plan and install an efficient underground stormwater system with GRAF EcoBloc Inspect SMART. Its lightweight, modular construction helps contractors build detention and infiltration systems in flexible configurations while maintaining access for inspection and cleaning.
Lightweight modules. Straightforward installation.
BARR Plastics supplies EcoBloc Inspect SMART for underground stormwater detention and infiltration. The modular system can be configured to suit the engineered footprint, required storage volume and site-specific installation conditions.
The system uses interlocking recycled-polypropylene modules to create a large underground void space for temporary stormwater storage. Integrated inspection channels support future camera inspection and maintenance access when the system is designed with the appropriate shafts and connections.
Why contractors use EcoBloc Inspect SMART
Lightweight modules
Individual modules are easy to handle and position during on-site assembly.
Modular configuration
Build the system footprint and storage volume around the approved project design.
Simple assembly
Interlocking components support efficient installation across multiple rows and layers.
Inspectable
Integrated channels help support inspection with suitable access points built into the system.
High-pressure cleanable
The system can support maintenance access for cleaning when designed and installed correctly.
Traffic-load applications
Suitable for engineered installations below traffic areas when cover and loading requirements are met.
How EcoBloc Inspect SMART is installed
The following sequence provides a practical overview. Final installation should follow approved engineering drawings, current GRAF instructions, geotechnical requirements and local regulations.
Excavate and prepare the site
Excavate to the approved footprint and depth. Confirm soil conditions, groundwater considerations, working clearances and safe excavation requirements. Remove unsuitable material and prepare the subgrade.
Prepare the bedding and geotextile
Install the specified granular bedding and level it to the required tolerance. Position the geotextile or protective layer so there is sufficient material to enclose the finished system.
Position EcoBloc baseplates
Lay out the baseplates according to the approved plan. Check orientation carefully so inspection channels and access points align with the project design.
Assemble the EcoBloc modules
Place EcoBloc Inspect SMART modules onto the baseplates and connect them using the specified connectors. Continue building the required rows and layers to create the designed storage volume.
Install connections and access points
Add end plates, inlet and outlet connections, ventilation and inspection access as required. Confirm inspection channels remain aligned and accessible for future maintenance.
Wrap or seal the system
Enclose the modules with the specified geotextile for infiltration applications, or with the required protective and impermeable membrane assembly for sealed detention applications.
Backfill and compact
Place suitable backfill around and above the installation according to project requirements. Follow specified compaction procedures and protect the system from loads that exceed allowable construction-stage conditions.
Complete the final inspection
Verify connections, access points, installed levels and enclosure integrity. Complete required inspection documentation before restoring pavement, landscaping or other final surface treatments.
Install EcoBloc for infiltration or detention
The same EcoBloc Inspect SMART module can serve different stormwater strategies. The enclosure method, outlet arrangement and site design determine how the underground system functions.
Return stormwater to surrounding soil
A permeable geotextile enclosure allows stored runoff to infiltrate into suitable surrounding soils. Soil conditions, pretreatment and local requirements should be evaluated during design.

A sealed membrane configuration holds stormwater underground before releasing it through a designed outlet at the required rate.
Explore Stormwater Detention →Project readiness checklist
Confirm these items before mobilizing your installation crew and EcoBloc materials.

EcoBloc installation FAQs
How long does EcoBloc installation take?
Installation time depends on the system size, excavation conditions, number of modules, crew size, membrane requirements, connections and site access. EcoBloc's lightweight modular format can simplify on-site assembly, but each project requires its own construction schedule.
Can EcoBloc Inspect SMART be installed under a parking lot?
It can be used in engineered traffic-load applications when the system design, cover depth, backfill, compaction and load conditions meet applicable requirements. The project engineer should confirm the final design.
Does EcoBloc require a concrete foundation?
Many installations use a properly prepared granular bedding layer instead of a concrete foundation. Final foundation requirements depend on site conditions, geotechnical recommendations and the engineered design.
Can the EcoBloc system be inspected after installation?
Yes. EcoBloc Inspect SMART includes integrated inspection channels. The design should also include suitable shafts and access points so inspection and maintenance equipment can reach the system.
Can EcoBloc be used for both infiltration and detention?
Yes. In infiltration applications, the system is typically wrapped with a permeable geotextile. For detention, the module structure can be enclosed within an impermeable membrane system to retain water before controlled discharge.
Does BARR Plastics install EcoBloc systems?
BARR Plastics supplies EcoBloc Inspect SMART and can provide product information and technical guidance. Installation should be completed by qualified contractors in accordance with approved engineering documents and manufacturer requirements.
