What Is EcoBloc Modular Stormwater System?

EcoBloc is an underground stormwater system made of strong, interlocking plastic blocks. These blocks create storage space beneath the ground. When it rains, stormwater flows into the system and stays there temporarily. The water then drains slowly into the soil or into a controlled outlet.

Why This Matters

Most traditional stormwater systems use big concrete vaults or pipes. Those can be costly, heavy, hard to install, and take up space on your site.

EcoBloc and modular systems are different:

  • They are lightweight but strong.
  • They install faster and cost less on labor.
  • They fit in tight or irregular spaces.
  • They let you build exactly the storage volume you need.

How EcoBloc Works

  1. Prepare the Site – Excavation and base leveling.
  2. Place Blocks – EcoBloc units stack together like building blocks.
  3. Connect and Cover – Block rows form a large underground chamber.
  4. Add Inlets and Outlets – Water enters and exits the system.
  5. Backfill – Cover system and restore surface.

Simple Benefits You’ll See

Better Control of Stormwater

The system captures rainwater on your site. You reduce peak flows and protect surrounding property.

Lower Installation Costs

EcoBloc weighs less than concrete. You spend less on machinery and manpower.

Flexible Design

You can arrange blocks to fit your site. You choose capacity based on rainfall data and project needs

Durable and Long-Lasting

The plastic blocks resist corrosion, degradation, and heavy loads.

Easier Maintenance

Optional access shafts let you inspect or clean the system without digging.

Real-World Uses

EcoBloc modular systems manage stormwater underground. They store, slow, or infiltrate rainwater directly on your site. This reduces flooding, protects infrastructure, and helps you meet drainage regulations without large surface ponds.

Your Questions Answered

What are the capacity options available for your Retention, Detention & Infiltration systems?

BARR Plastics offers the GRAF EcoBloc system, a modular solution for stormwater retention and detention. Each EcoBloc module has a gross volume of 225 liters (59.4 US gallons) and a reservoir volume of 217 liters (57.3 US gallons), providing a 96% storage coefficient. These modules can be stacked up to 10 layers high (3.34m), allowing for installation depths of up to 5 meters (16.4 feet). For projects requiring greater depths, the EcoBloc Inspect Ultra modules can be installed at depths up to 7.5 meters (24.6 feet). If installation beyond 7.5 meters is necessary, approval from GRAF can be sought to accommodate specific project requirements. This design enables the construction of systems with capacities ranging from hundreds of gallons to hundreds of thousands of gallons or more, tailored to specific project requirements.

For detailed information and assistance in configuring a system that meets your specific needs, it's recommended to contact a BARR Stormwater components specialist.

How do you ensure the durability of your systems against heavy loads, such as vehicular traffic?

The GRAF EcoBloc system is engineered to withstand heavy loads, including vehicular traffic, ensuring durability and reliability in various applications. Key features contributing to its robustness include:

  • High Load-Bearing Capacity: The EcoBloc modules are designed to support substantial weights. For instance, the GRAF EcoBloc Inspect Smart has a heavy-duty load-bearing capacity of up to 60 tons (HS-25) with a minimum earth covering of 800 mm (31.5 inches).
  • Installation Depth Flexibility: These modules can be installed at depths of up to 5 meters (16.4 feet), even under heavy loads, allowing for up to 10 layers of stacking. Higher loading and burial depth capabilities are available on request - ie: to support large crane and Fire Truck loading.
  • Durable Design: Constructed with high-quality materials, the EcoBloc system is designed for a service life exceeding 75 years, ensuring long-term performance and sustainability.

By adhering to recommended installation guidelines, including appropriate earth covering and proper stacking, the GRAF EcoBloc system provides a robust solution capable of handling heavy vehicular loads in stormwater management applications.

Can these tanks be integrated with existing stormwater management infrastructure?

Yes, the GRAF EcoBloc system is designed for seamless integration with existing stormwater management infrastructure. Its modular design and versatile connection options allow it to adapt to various project requirements, enhancing or expanding current systems effectively.

Key Features Facilitating Integration:

  • Versatile Pipe Connections: The EcoBloc system accommodates a wide range of pipe diameters, with connection surfaces up to DN 600 (approximately 24 inches). This flexibility ensures compatibility with existing pipelines, facilitating straightforward integration.
  • Modular and Scalable Design: Each EcoBloc module has a gross volume of 205 liters (54.2 US gallons) and can be stacked up to 10 layers high, allowing for installation depths of up to 5 meters (16.4 feet). This modularity enables customization to meet specific capacity and spatial requirements, making it suitable for both small-scale and large-scale applications.
  • Integrated Access Shafts: The system features theEcobloc Inspect Smart Plus Shaft (or Vario Shaft, which is used with our ULTRA), which provides easy access for inspection and maintenance. This shaft can be positioned flexibly within the EcoBloc system, allowing for convenient monitoring and upkeep without disrupting existing infrastructure.
  • High Load-Bearing Capacity: Designed to withstand heavy loads, the EcoBloc system supports up to 60 tons (HS-25) with appropriate earth covering. This robustness ensures durability and reliability, even when integrated into areas subjected to vehicular traffic.

By incorporating these features, the GRAF EcoBloc system offers a flexible and efficient solution for enhancing existing stormwater management infrastructure, addressing challenges such as increased runoff, regulatory compliance, and space constraints.
