    6 months

  • Location:

    Vancouver, BC

  • Industry:

    General Contractor

1. OBJECTIVES

The primary objective was to deliver stormwater detention tanks that:

  • Met the regulatory requirements for stormwater capacity.
  • Fit seamlessly into the limited space available in the parkade.
  • Integrated effectively with the existing infrastructure.

2. CHALLENGES

Matacan Construction was tasked with installing a stormwater detention system for a building with an underground parkade. They faced specific challenges:

  1. Space Constraints: The tanks had to fit into the tight dimensions of the underground parkade.
  2. Capacity Requirements: Two tanks were needed—one with a capacity of 6059 US gallons and another with 2625 US gallons—to meet stormwater detention regulations.
  3. Custom Specifications: The tanks required custom fabrication to align with both the volume and dimensional requirements of the project.

3. SOLUTIONS

Proposed Solution

  • Custom Dimensions: BARR Plastics manufactured tanks to fit the tight constraints of the underground parkade while ensuring they could hold the required volumes.
  • Tailored Connections: The tanks were equipped with strategically placed connections to seamlessly integrate with the client’s existing systems.
  • Structural Integrity: The use of structural panels ensured the tanks could withstand the environmental conditions and stress within the confined space.

Custom Fabrication

This project involved:

  • Designing tanks to precise dimensions to maximize parkade space utilization.
  • Implementing specific fittings and connection points to align with Matacan’s operational requirements.

Project Phases

  1. Planning & Design: Collaborated closely with Matacan Construction to finalize tank dimensions, capacity, and specifications.
  2. Fabrication: Custom-built the tanks to meet agreed-upon specifications.
  3. Delivery & Support: Ensured on-time delivery and provided on-site support during installation.

4. OUTCOMES AND BENEFITS

The project was executed over a period of ten weeks, with a two-day turnaround for pricing and planning.
The successful implementation resulted in:

  • Eight trucks equipped with self-loading skids, facilitating easy and quick loading for dust control in summer and brine spraying in winter.
  • Improved operational efficiency and versatility in the Customers highway maintenance tasks.
  • Enhanced capacity utilization and value of the trucks with a wider variety of uses and applications.
  • This project not only met the Customer’s immediate requirements but also provided a scalable solution for future operational needs, reinforcing BARR Plastics Inc.’s commitment to delivering customized, high-quality solutions.
