What is brine de-icing, and how is it different from anti-icing?
Both terms describe the same liquid, applied at different points in a storm. Anti-icing is a brine pass on a dry surface before precipitation starts — it stops an ice-to-pavement bond from ever forming. De-icing is a brine pass (often pre-wetting granular salt) after snow or ice is already on the ground, to break a bond that's already there.
Sodium Chloride Brine
Mixed to roughly 23% concentration, salt brine is effective to about -18°C to -21°C — well past the point granular salt alone becomes unreliable.
Extended Cold-Weather Blends
For extreme low temperatures, a batch can be topped up with liquid calcium chloride to extend the effective range further than straight sodium chloride brine.
Spill Containment
Bulk storage can be paired with galvanized steel containment vessels, so a leak or overflow is captured rather than released to a Ditch, City Storm Drain, or infiltrates into the water table.
Brine has a lifecycle. Each stage needs the right attention.
Liquid brine flows from a mixing unit (Brine Maker) to bulk storage tanks, before loading into truck or trailer-mounted spreaders. Failing to maximize water flow, control salt concentration, maintain adequate standing storage capacity, or calibrate the spraying systems could all significantly lessen the effectiveness of your de-icing program.
Make it, and keep enough of it
Brine is mixed to a target concentration in a dedicated maker, then held in bulk storage until a system is called for. Undersized storage is the most common reason a program runs out mid-event.
Anti-ice before the storm arrives
Applied to a dry surface ahead of snowfall, brine prevents the initial ice-to-pavement bond from forming at all — the cheapest, most effective point in the entire cycle to intervene.
Break the bond, then hold the surface
Once snow or ice has formed, brine is reapplied — often pre-wetting granular material — to break the existing bond and keep it from reforming through freeze-thaw cycles.
